Making Charcoal

Gathering crop waste

Charcoal production is a huge problem facing most of East Africa.  It is one of the leading causes of deforestation and health problems for women and children (who tend to be around cooking fires).  We worked with the EC to try and produce an experimental alternative to traditional charcoal (made of crop waste and cassava flour), that should burn longer and cleaner than that made from wood. It was a messy, but hopefully productive process.

Mixing the burnt material with the cassava paste.
